A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Flintshire and other parts of Wales, with conditions expected to cause travel disruption and potential safety risks.

The Met Office warning is in place from 3am to 12pm tomorrow (Thursday), as wintry showers and freezing temperatures combine to create hazardous conditions across the region.

What to Expect

Showers of rain, sleet, and snow are forecast, with snow more likely inland and on higher ground above 100 metres.

While only a few centimetres of snow are expected, icy stretches on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths will be a significant concern.

The Met Office has warned of possible delays to road, bus, and train journeys, as well as an increased risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Staying Safe in Flintshire

Residents of Flintshire are advised to take precautions to stay safe during the wintry conditions.

If driving, ensure your vehicle is equipped with essentials such as warm clothing, a blanket, a torch, food and water, an ice scraper, and a phone charger.

Drivers should also allow extra time for journeys and check for road closures or delays to public transport before setting off.

For pedestrians and cyclists, the icy conditions present a risk of slips and injuries.

The Met Office recommends using pavements and cycle paths that are more likely to have been treated and taking extra care when navigating untreated surfaces.

Health Risks in Cold Weather

Cold weather can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable residents such as older people and those with existing health conditions.

Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory problems.

Flintshire residents are encouraged to stay warm by layering clothing, heating their homes adequately, and ensuring they have necessary supplies at home in case of delays or disruptions.

Be Prepared

The Met Office has noted that weather conditions can change rapidly and advises people to stay updated by checking local forecasts.

While the yellow warning indicates a medium likelihood of snow and ice with a low overall impact, preparation is key to minimising risks.

Local residents are encouraged to plan their routes carefully and consider postponing non-essential travel during the warning period.

For those travelling in rural or higher-elevation areas of Flintshire, the risk of snow accumulation is greater, so extra caution is advised.
