Spain’s flag carrier, Iberia, has become the world’s first airline to operate Airbus’s A321XLR, a high-efficiency, long-range single-aisle aircraft designed to expand route options and improve passenger comfort.

The new jet, powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines, will begin by flying shorter European routes before its first transatlantic mission from Madrid to Boston in late November.

A notable aspect of the A321XLR is its enhanced efficiency and sustainability, achieved through significant design innovations by Airbus. Among these is the assembly of the aircraft’s wings at Airbus’s Broughton facility.

Iberia’s CEO and Chairman, Marco Sansavini, expressed the airline’s enthusiasm for leading the way with this aircraft model, saying, “We are very proud to be the launch airline for this new Airbus aircraft. The A321XLR will allow us to reach new destinations, operating transoceanic routes and doing so in a more efficient way.”

Designed for long-haul routes, the A321XLR boasts an impressive range of 4,700 nautical miles—15% further than its predecessor, the A321LR—making it a game-changer for airlines looking to connect medium-sized markets without needing larger wide-body planes.

Airbus has also prioritised fuel efficiency, with a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to older models. This shift reduces both carbon emissions and operating costs. Demand for the jet has been strong, with over 500 orders placed by airlines worldwide.

Onboard, the A321XLR seats 182 passengers in a two-class setup, featuring lie-flat business class seats with aisle access. Passengers will also benefit from Airbus’s Airspace cabin, which includes larger overhead compartments offering 60% more luggage space for quicker, less stressful boarding.

The cabin’s modern lighting system and in-seat connectivity across all classes further enhance the flight experience.

Christian Scherer, Airbus’s CEO of Commercial Aircraft, commented on the aircraft’s successful handover to Iberia. “Five years in the making, the newest member of the Airbus family is all set to join its first operator, Iberia,” he said. “The A321XLR will enable countless new non-stop destinations; it truly opens a new chapter in air connectivity. We are pleased to share this special moment with a special customer: gracias y felicidades Iberia.”
