A part of the the public footpath alongside the River Dee in Sealand will be closed for nine months while essential flood defence is carried out.

The section which forms part of National Cycle route 568, will be closed between Hawarden Railway Bridge and the link to Foxes Lane, from 10 November 2014 for nine months for essential works to strengthen the earth flood defences as part of the Northern Gateway Site Development.

The work is being carried out by contractors VolkaStevin on behalf of the Welsh Government.

The closure will be in two phases: initially between the Blue Bridge, Queensferry and Hawarden Railway Bridge and finally between the railway bridge and the Foxes Lane link.

During this time, cyclists and pedestrians will have access to an alternative route along the entrance road to Tata’s site, which will connect with the cycle route near Hawarden Bridge Railway station.

This route will be appropriately signed.

Councillor Bernie Attridge, Cabinet Member for Environment and Deputy Leader said,

‘The closure is essential to enable the work to take place. We are aware how popular and well used this route is and are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause to both cyclists and pedestrians. We hope that the alternative route, which will be available throughout the closure, will help to minimise this inconvenience.’
