Five winter Flintshire walks to make the most of this year

The great outdoors is something many of us take for granted. Well, we all make the most of it during the summer months, but as the days get shorter and the temperature drops, we often shun the idea of getting out in nature.
That can often be detrimental to our mental health. After all, often we get out in the summer for a walk to look after our mental health. Our problems don’t just disappear in winter. Often, they are exacerbated, with many people requiring the likes of counselling or even residential rehab treatment to get their lives back on track.
If you struggle with your mental health and often find getting out for a walk helps, then do it. Whatever the weather. In fact, there are some incredible spots across Flintshire that look fantastic in the winter time…
Moel Famau
The highest peak in the Clwydian Range, Moel Famau provides some breathtaking views throughout its walking trails that provide great opportunities for reflection and contemplation. There are trails to suit all walkers and during the winter it provides a real magical atmosphere with a sparking of frost or snow.
The Dolgellau Path is the most popular trail, winding its way through some stunning woodland as well as open moorland. It’s around a five mile trail, beginning at the car park at Bryn Arw and ascending to look over the Vale of Clwyd and the Snowdonia mountain range.
The Greenfield Valley Heritage Park
If you’re looking for something more leisurely, Greenfield Valley Heritage Park can certainly provide that, and is home to a large network of accessible paths that follow the River Mwd. You’ll pass ancient ruins, picturesque woodlands and the sound of the water can be really soothing.
The circular walk is around two and a half miles, taking around an hour to an hour and a half to complete and it provides a real sense of history as you take in the remnants of the area’s industrial past. These can offer some excellent photo opportunities, particularly on a crisp winter’s morning.
Talacre Beach and the Point of Ayr Lighthouse
For those who enjoy coastal walks, Talacre Beach is a must-visit destination. This stretch of sandy shoreline is perfect for a winter walk, providing stunning views of the Dee Estuary and the Welsh coastline. The iconic Point of Ayr Lighthouse adds to the scenic beauty and provides an excellent focal point for photographs.
The walk along the beach is around three miles long, making it an easy option for families or those looking for a gentle outing. Enjoy the sound of the waves and the fresh sea air as you stroll along the shore. In winter, you may even spot some migratory birds along the estuary, making it a great spot for birdwatching. Wrap up warm and consider bringing a thermos of hot cocoa to enjoy as you take in the coastal views.
Loggerheads Country Park
Loggerheads Country Park offers mixed terrain that is a brilliant destination for a winter stroll. There’s rugged cliffs, wooded valleys and the tranquility of the River Alyn passing through it.
You’ll find trails of varying lengths with the most common route to take being the two and a half mile Alyn River Walk. This really showcases the park at its finest, taking in the mixed terrain mentioned in a real peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for de-stressing. You should keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife, including many species of bird and deer, which can further add to that calming environment.
Wepre Park and the Castle Ruins
Wepre Park, located near Connah’s Quay, is an excellent place to explore during winter. The park features a variety of trails that wind through ancient woodlands and alongside the picturesque River Deeside. One of the highlights of this walk is the impressive ruins of Wepre Castle, a medieval fortress that adds a historical element to your outdoor adventure.
The combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue makes this walk particularly rewarding. In winter, the crisp air and stunning views of the surrounding hills create a refreshing atmosphere. Be sure to take a moment to appreciate the tranquillity of the park and the beauty of the castle ruins against the winter landscape.
