Design Students Help Create Science Garden For Techniquest Glyndwr

A group of students have been honing their graphic design skills whilst helping create a new Science Garden at Wrexham’s discovery centre.

The four students, who are completing the final year of their BA Honours Degree Course in Graphic Design and Multimedia at Wrexham Glyndwr University, are working alongside Techniquest Glyndŵr with the design of a new Science Garden on the university campus.

The brief provided by Techniquest Glyndŵr to the students was to develop a cohesive design for the welcome notice and various interpretational panels to be installed in the Science Garden which is on track to be opened to the public later this year.

Students Laura King and Tom Richards collaborated as a pair to produce their designs whilst Ryan Jones and Aled Roberts worked separately to develop their ideas. These were then presented to a small panel from Techniquest Glyndŵr who last week came to the University’s Regent Street Arts Centre to consider which designs could be utilised in the Garden.

The various designs developed by Laura and Tom were eventually chosen by Techniquest Glyndŵr following presentations from all four art students. Now the pair will work closely with staff at the popular Science Discovery Centre to refine and eventually oversee the installation of their creative work in the new Science Garden.

The displays will be intended to help visitors interact with and understand the various exhibits that are to be installed in the garden area which is currently under construction.

Mandy Jones, Operations Manager of Techniquest Glyndŵr was a member of the selection panel which chose the winning design scheme. She said: “We were impressed by the creativity of all of the students as they presented their designs and they had clearly worked hard to produce the material they presented to us.

“We were looking for design ideas for the Science Garden that would reflect the nature of our centre which is to encourage children to explore and interact with science.

“We eventually decided that the designs produced by Laura and Tom were the most interesting and offered the best opportunity to present the various aspects of our new Science Garden in an intriguing and attractive way.

“We look forward to working closely with them over the next few weeks to further refine their designs and have them produced ready for installation and the public opening of the garden this summer.”

Course Tutor Pauline Amphlett added: “We were very happy to offer the opportunity for our students to work on the design brief produced by Techniquest Glyndŵr. It offered a realistic and challenging exercise to develop their skills as graphic designers and a valuable chance for the chosen design to showcase the work of the students to a wider audience.

“Both Tom and Laura have now got the significant challenge to work on their designs to be ready for installation in the Garden this summer. I wish them well and look forward to seeing their work in place”
