The Deeside Dragons delivered a breathtaking comeback to win the 2024 Welsh Cup on Saturday night, defeating Cardiff Fire 11-9 in a high-octane final at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff.

The match had a blistering start, with Cardiff Fire surging to a commanding 4-0 lead within the first ten minutes. Deeside looked shaken, but the Dragons responded late in the first period with two crucial goals, narrowing the deficit to 4-2 by the break.

In the second period, the momentum swung firmly in Deeside’s favour. They launched a ferocious offensive, with the Dragons racking up four goals.

Cardiff could only muster one in reply, leaving Deeside ahead 6-5 going into the final period.

The third period saw an explosive exchange of goals, with both teams throwing everything at each other.

Deeside scored five more times, while Cardiff Fire also managed five goals of their own, but the Dragons’ relentless attack left their opponents chasing the game. Despite a late Cardiff goal, Deeside’s 11-9 victory was sealed.

Deeside Dragons’ General Manager, Shaun Bebbington, praised the team’s effort and the significance of the win. “This win means everything to the club, the community, and Welsh ice hockey as a whole,” he said. “It’s a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from the players to the fans.”

Bebbington also thanked Cardiff Fire for their role in making the return of the Welsh Cup so memorable, noting how the intense competition showcased the growing strength of the sport in Wales.

Dragons fans won’t have to wait long to see their team back in action, with Deeside set to face the Sheffield Scimitars at home on Sunday, 6th October.

With the energy of their Welsh Cup triumph behind them, fans are sure to create an electric atmosphere at the Deeside Ice Rink. Face-off is scheduled for 5.15 PM, with doors opening at 4.30 PM.
