Police are warning shopkeepers and the public to be on their guard following an increase in the number of fake £20 notes being used around north Wales.

Police have received six reports of fake £20 notes being handed over the counter in recent days.

On June 30 the fake currency was used at a shop in Penrhyndeudraeth High Street and at three shops in Bala High Street in Gwynedd.

On Tuesday July 1 counterfeit £20 notes were used at a pub in Hope Flintshire and at two premises in Regent Street Wrexham.

Here’s a video from Thames Valley Police on how to spot a fake £20 note.

Inspector Dewi Jones said;

“We would urge shopkeepers and businesses to check that the notes they are given have the correct markings and to use Ultra Violet devices which can detect forged notes.  In south Gwynedd we will distribute counterfeit currency UV detection pens to shopkeepers. Contact Gwynedd South Shopwatch officer PCSO Sharon Jones on 07768556421.

“If you are given counterfeit currency please call the police on 101.”
