A new Economic Advisory Group has been unveiled by Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens, aiming to deliver a “new era of prosperity and growth” for Wales.

The group will shape UK government strategies on economic development, industrial innovation, and clean energy, giving Welsh industries a pivotal role in future policies.

Announced at the annual CBI Wales dinner in Cardiff, the initiative marks the first time leaders from Welsh business, industry, education, and unions will directly influence cross-government policy.

The group will convene for its first meeting in Cardiff on 2 December.

The advisory body is part of efforts to revitalise Wales’s economy by supporting key industries, fostering clean energy initiatives, and driving UK growth priorities.

Harnessing Welsh Expertise

Speaking at the launch, Jo Stevens highlighted the transformative potential of the new group:

“My new Economic Advisory Group will harness Welsh talent, ambition and creativity to usher in a new era of prosperity and growth for our nation.

“This is about jobs for you, investment in where you live, and opportunities for your children. Working alongside the Welsh Government and our industry leaders, we will rekindle Wales’s proud industrial roots with the jobs and industries of the future.”

The advisory group will work to influence the UK Government’s upcoming Industrial Strategy, expected in 2025, and outline Welsh priorities for the next Spending Review.

Its focus includes advancing clean energy projects, reviving industrial hubs, and unlocking Wales’s growth potential in sectors like manufacturing, digital technologies, and medical innovations.

The Welsh Secretary’s announcement builds on recent economic successes for the region, including £1 billion in investments for North Wales, new growth deals, and a landmark steel deal to safeguard the industry’s future.

Community and Industry Leaders Welcome Initiative

The Economic Advisory Group has received widespread support from Welsh leaders and organisations.

Alison Orrells, Chair of CBI Wales, said:

“I welcome the opportunity to share our members’ insights on the actions needed to unlock and drive sustainable economic growth… Welsh businesses of all sizes and sectors can play an essential role in enabling the government to deliver on its growth mission.”

Shavanah Taj, General Secretary of TUC Cymru, added:

“Many parts of Wales have been scarred by deindustrialisation and underinvestment, which must be addressed. We will champion investment in manufacturing, decent work, and a just transition to net zero.”

Oriel Petry, Senior Vice President at Airbus, commented:

“I look forward to providing strong advocacy on how Wales can capitalise on its strengths while taking advantage of the industries of the future.”

The group features prominent figures from across Wales, including representatives from the creative industries, renewables, fintech, and academia. Key members include:

  • Alison Orrells, Chair, CBI Wales
  • Shavanah Taj, TUC Cymru General Secretary
  • Jessica Hooper, Director, Renewables UK Cymru
