Police Dog Otto helps officers find suspect following attempted burglary in Flintshire
A canine crimefighter got the opportunity to put his training to use on Friday night by tracking down a suspect in his favourite game of hide and seek.
The incident occurred during PD Otto’s night shift when he assisted the North Flintshire Neighborhood Police Team in tracking down the male offender who had fled the scene of an attempted burglary.
PD Otto, a Belgian Malinois, is known for his love of the game of hide and seek and used his keen sense of smell and expert training to locate the suspect and assist in his capture.
Cheshire and North Wales Alliance Police Dog Unit posted an update on social media saying: “PD Otto has started his night shift by helping @NWPNorthFlint find a male that had made off after an attempted burglary! PD Otto’s favorite game is hide and seek.”
The use of police dogs like PD Otto has proven to be a valuable asset in law enforcement, as they are able to quickly and efficiently track suspects in a wide range of situations.
PD Otto is one of the North Wales & Cheshire Police Dog Alliance’s general-purpose police dogs.
General-purpose police dogs are multi-disciplined canines who are trained to work under a variety of conditions.
Dog breeds used tend to be German Shepherds, Dutch Herders, or Malinois.
They have a depth of skills that includes searching for missing persons, tracking suspects from crime scenes, and recovering recently discarded articles that could be used as evidence.
They also protect their handlers and other officers in dangerous situations, and even the mere presence of these police dogs can also be enough to discourage bad behaviour.
Most handlers in the North Wales & Cheshire Police Dog Alliance have a general-purpose dog and a specialist dog, such as a Labrador, Cocker, or Springer Spaniel.
