Plans to turn a former pub in Connah’s Quay into a dental surgery with five treatment rooms have been submitted to Flintshire County Council.

The Custom House Hotel has been shut since 2023 after attempts to revitalise its reputation and attract new customers post-Covid failed.

Now an application has been submitted by Dr Mostafa Hassaan, to transform the ground floor into a dental surgery, with five treatment rooms offering both private and NHS dental treatments and a dedicated decontamination area for hygiene.

The Custom House dental practice will form part of a new venture for Dr Hassaan, who wants to offer more dentists the opportunity he had to move to North Wales and reduce the shortage of dental provision in the region.

Dr Hassaan is a director of Eirlys Dental Practice. The practice has surgeries in Colwyn Bay and Caernarfon and has also converted the former Magistrates Court in Dollgellau into a surgery.

But the Connah’s Quay site will be part of a new separate venture, albeit with a similar ethos.

“I want to serve our community with our ethics of drive, trust and compassion at the forefront of what we do,” said Dr Hassaan. “It will however be under different management and ownership structures to Eirlys.

“We plan to offer NHS treatments while incorporating elements of dental education. If approved our plans will focus on introducing new clinicians and staff to the Welsh dental workforce, making the surgery a gateway for more dentists to come and work in North Wales
