A tweet this afternoon by Cllr Bernie Attridge appears to confirm Aldi will be building a new store in Connah’s Quay.

The proposed store would be built on the site of the former Co-Op shop which laid empty since closing in October 2012.

Its believed Aldi could be the anchor business as part of a multi unit development, though nothing has been confirmed.

No plans have been submitted to the council date by Aldi however, in November an Aldi spokesperson told a Flintshire County Council planning meeting they intended to build a new store in Connah’s Quay and had held detailed negotiations about the site.

A new store in Connah’s Quay would create up to 35 new jobs, Aldi say they would aim to have the store open by 2016.

Bosses at Aldi were angered earlier this week when a previously successful application for a new store in Broughton was referred back due to Flintshire Council’s chief planning officer, councillors have been instructed to reconsider their decision, the land was originally designated for housing development.

Aldi is currently opening over one new store a week in the UK, they are aiming to capitalise on a huge growth in market share versus the big four supermarket, the company has a target of 1000 stores in the UK by 2022 they currently have 530 stores across the UK.

The discount supermarket chain already has over 9,000 stores in over 18 countries, and an estimated turnover of more than €50bn.

Based in Germany, the chain was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother’s store inEssen which had been in operation since 1913; it is one of the world’s largest privately owned companies.

The brothers built up a chain of stores until, by 1960, they owned 300 shops, and split the operation into two separate groups, that later became Aldi Nord, headquartered in Essen; and ALDI Süd, headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

The two operate independently, each within specific areas. In 1962 they introduced the name Aldi (short for Albrecht Diskont)
