Co-op is calling on passionate member-owners in Wales to stand for election to its National Members’ Council, offering an opportunity to help shape the future of the UK’s largest co-operative.

The council consists of 100 elected representatives from across the UK, playing a key role in influencing decisions, promoting co-operative values, and ensuring members’ voices are heard at the highest level.

There is currently one seat available in Wales.

Debbie Williams, Vice President of the National Members’ Council, encouraged members to get involved.

“As a co-operative, we work together for the benefit of all our member-owners, so we want to ensure our Council has representatives from all parts of the UK and all walks of life.

“Over the past eighteen months, nearly 1.5 million more member-owners have joined us. It’s an exciting time, as we prepare to celebrate the United Nations’ second Year of Co-operatives in 2025—an opportunity to highlight the positive impact of co-operatives on the communities they serve.

“We know that many of our member-owners are passionate about our Co-op and co-operative businesses, and being part of the Members’ Council is a fantastic way to get involved, join something bigger, and make a real impact.”

To be eligible to stand, candidates must have been a Co-op member before January 2024 and have earned 100 membership points in the past year, equivalent to spending around £5 a week in Co-op Food stores.

Successful candidates are elected for a three-year term.

Online briefings will be held throughout February for those interested in standing, with nominations closing at midday on 28 February.
