Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa: What’s Changing in 2025?

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Have you ever dreamed of living in Portugal? Now might be the time! With the current possibilities of remote work, you can easily move to this country. The government has introduced a digital nomad visa Portugal for everyone who has a decent income from a remote job and wants to enjoy all the benefits of Portuguese hospitality. If you are going to make this life-changing decision this year, find out what the conditions are for nomad migration to this country in 2025.

Minimum Income Requirement Increase

To meet the current economic conditions in Portugal, the government has increased the minimum salary required to apply for a nomad visa. It is now tied to the country’s minimum wage, which is 870 EUR per month. To qualify, you are expected to earn at least 3,480 EUR after tax if you plan to move to Portugal alone.

If you plan to migrate as a couple or a family, your total income should be as follows:

  • 5,220 EUR for a couple;
  • 6,264 EUR for a family with a child;
  • additional +1,044 EUR per child dependent.

Please note that your salary should be proven with a bank statement or pay slips from your workplace.

Social Security Number (NISS) Is Now Required

It is not yet official, but Portuguese migration offices require NISS when you apply for a residence permit. This requirement is not that challenging, though, as the document can be used online. It is just an additional layer of bureaucracy you need to go through before you can enjoy the Portuguese coasts.

Alternatives If You Do Not Qualify

While obtaining NISS is a matter of paperwork, meeting the minimum income requirement might be challenging for some. No worries, as there is an alternative, and a much lower income is needed to be able to apply for it. This is a D7 visa.

How is it different from a digital nomad visa?

  1. You need to have a passive income of at least 870 EUR per month. It can come from real estate, investments, etc.
  2. Its turnaround time is shorter: 1–2 months compared to 3–4 months for the digital nomad visa.
  3. It is designed for non-EU residents, which is suitable for UK residents, as they are no longer considered EU nationals.

Still, all the basic conditions are very similar for both options. If you are hesitant about which option is more suitable for you, you can always contact a migration company like Migrun. The company constantly deals with migration applications and tracks all the changes, so it would be able to find the most suitable solution for your situation.

Even though there were slight changes in requirements, they are not significant. Therefore, most citizens of different countries will still be able to apply. The likelihood of a positive outcome is high, and refusals are rare. The option of relocation to Portugal always remains open to all those who are looking for a better space for the future.
