Drivers are advised there are to be series of night closures on the M6 between Knutsford and Middlewich as part of a major scheme to improve journeys for drivers.

Construction is underway the M6 where Highways England is upgrading a 20 mile stretch of the route between junctions 16 near Crewe and 19 near Knutsford to a smart motorway. The work is being undertaken in sections to minimise disruption, with the first section being an 8 mile stretch between Knutsford and Middlewich near junction 18.

Over the next 3 weekends, 6 overnight closures are planned between junctions 18 and 19 between 10pm and 6am for resurfacing work. Signed diversions will be in place.

Southbound: junctions 19 (Knutsford) to 18 (Middlewich)
Saturday 16 April, Sunday 17 April, Saturday 23 April and Sunday 24 April.

Northbound: junctions 18 (Middlewich) to 19 (Knutsford)
Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May.

Highways England Project Manager Kate Beirne said:

The closures are part of a major scheme to ease congestion and help keep traffic moving, making journeys more reliable.

We have carefully planned the work to minimise disruption. We are carrying out the resurfacing work at night when traffic levels are at their lowest.

Smart motorways improve journeys by monitoring traffic flow and setting speed limits accordingly to keep traffic moving smoothly. The hard shoulder will be converted to a traffic lane to create the much needed extra capacity.

Information about road conditions and speed limits will be displayed to drivers on electronic road signs.

More details are available on the scheme website.
