European Election 2014: Twitter reaction to UKIP’s surprise win in Flintshire
While Nigel Farage was hailing last nights stunning UKIP performance the “most extraordinary result in British politics for 100 years ” others in Flintshire used Twitter to express their dismay at the result in Flintshire, which saw UKIP topple labour and claim nearly a whopping third of the overall vote in the county.
There was very little reaction to the result from those Flintshire politicians who are regular users of Twitter, local media outlets across north Wales were conspicuous by their absence on Twitter, with hyperlocal sites such as Wrexham.com filling the ‘real time’ gap.
The result took many by surprise in the county with reaction on Twitter fairly unanimous in terms of sentiment, we’ve picked a few of the more ‘printable’ ones.
The result in Flintshire saw UKIP take 32.7% of the vote with 11,800 followed by Labour with 28% 10,121 and Conservative with 20.9% 7539 in total 36033 people in Flintshire voted which represented less than a third of those registered to vote.
UKIP also won in Wrexham and Denbighshire.
