There’s good news for Aldi store staff in Flintshire today.

The supermarket chain has announced a further pay rise for its staff, increasing the starting pay for store assistants to £11.40 per hour nationally, effective from 1st July 2023.

The new hourly starting rate, is more than 13 per cent higher than it was a year ago, representing an investment of more than £100m in colleague pay in the last 12 months.

The new pay rates exceed the Real Living Wage set by the Living Wage Foundation, which currently stands at £10.90 per hour nationally.

Aldi also said it remains the only supermarket in the UK to pay for breaks, “providing an additional £927 annually for the average Store colleague.”

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said, “We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and we are committed to ensuring they are also the best paid.”

He added, “We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11.40 per hour to all Store Assistants.”

The pay increase announcement follows a series of similar moves, including raising hourly rates for 7,000 Warehouse colleagues across the UK.

In addition to the pay rise, Aldi plans to create more than 6,000 new jobs this year, adding to the 4,500 permanent roles created last year.

Aldi, which was named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 2022 by consumer champion Which?, currently employs more than 40,000 staff and operates over 990 stores across the UK.
