University of Chester pioneers AI tool for law students

The University of Chester Law School has become one of the first in the UK to adopt new artificial intelligence technology designed to support students entering the modern legal profession.
The Law School has introduced Lexis+AI across its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, giving students access to AI-powered tools that support legal research, analysis and drafting.
The technology, developed by global legal information company LexisNexis, uses artificial intelligence to provide insights drawn from trusted legal sources, helping users navigate case law, legislation and practical guidance.
University leaders say the move will help ensure students graduate with both strong legal knowledge and experience of the technologies increasingly used in legal practice.
The Law School’s courses already place a strong emphasis on applied learning, with students completing practical assessments such as client advice tasks, advocacy exercises and legal research projects. All students also undertake employability modules and work placements, with opportunities to gain experience through the university’s legal advice clinic and community engagement projects.
Lexis+AI will now be embedded across modules and practical workshops to help students develop experience with AI-supported legal research, understand ethical considerations around its use and build digital confidence alongside critical thinking skills.
Karen Waldron, Product Development Director at LexisNexis, said: “Lexis+AI represents a fundamental shift in how legal work gets done. By combining generative AI with trusted legal content and practical guidance, we’re helping lawyers work faster, think more strategically and act with greater confidence.
“Giving students access to this technology isn’t about experimentation; it’s about equipping the next generation of lawyers for a profession where AI is already reshaping research, drafting and decision-making.”
Dr Erin O’Leary, Head of Chester Law School, said: “The adoption of Lexis+AI is a bold step that reflects our vision for legal education. We’re not just teaching Law, we’re preparing our students to lead in a profession evolving with technology.
“As the legal sector continues to embrace digital transformation, the University of Chester Law School remains at the forefront, ensuring our students are not just prepared for the future, they’re shaping it.”
Lexis+AI draws on established legal resources including Halsbury’s Laws and the All England Law Reports and has been developed in line with LexisNexis responsible AI principles, which emphasise human oversight and accountability.
