“Don’t forget about wildlife during heatwave conditions”, urges RSPCA

The RSCPA is urging members of the public not to forget wildlife as heatwave conditions continue across the country.
The plea comes after the animal welfare charity experience its busiest day of the year on June 24 after receiving 4,135 calls from members of the public concerned about animals.
While many pet owners will be focused on keeping their companions safe and comfortable in the heat, the RSPCA is encouraging people to spare a thought for wildlife, as many species can struggle to find food, water and shelter during prolonged periods of hot weather.
With hot conditions set to continue over the weekend and into next week, the RSPCA is calling on members of the public to help wild animals by leaving out shallow dishes of water and creating shaded areas in gardens using shrubs, plants and other natural cover. Wet cat and dog food can also be left out for hedgehogs and badgers.
Dog owners are also urged to be kept under close control around wildlife, particularly during the cooler mornings and evenings when animals are more active.
Rebecca Machin, wildlife expert for the RSPCA, said: “The last heatwave showed just how quickly extreme temperatures can affect animals, including wildlife.
“The RSPCA experienced its busiest day of the year as thousands of people contacted us with concerns for all kinds of animals.
“With another heatwave now here, we’re asking people not to forget about wildlife. Many wild animals will be struggling to find water, food and shelter, but there are simple things we can all do to help.”
The appeal also comes as the RSPCA’s Cruelty Hurts Love Rescues campaign shines a light on the charity’s busiest time of year, when inspectors, rescuers and animal rescue officers respond to thousands of calls about animals in need.
