New councillors elected to Flintshire County Council in two by-elections

New councillors have been elected in both of Flintshire’s by-elections, held on Thursday in Connah’s Quay Central and Argoed and New Brighton.
Dave Vernon has been elected in Connah’s Quay Central for Reform UK.
Faron Hadfield-Jones has held Argoed and New Brighton for the Liberal Democrats.
Flintshire County Council had not published the official results on its website at the time of writing.
Hadfield-Jones took 39.8 per cent of the vote, according to figures published by Election Maps UK, up 3.8 percentage points on 2022.
Reform’s Angela Hughes was second on 31.7 per cent, a new entrant to the ward.
Plaid Cymru’s Jack Morris was third on 12.4 per cent, down 2.3 percentage points on 2022.
The Conservative and Labour candidates tied on 7.3 per cent each, with the Green candidate on 1.5 per cent.
No Independent candidate stood this time, in a ward where independent candidates took 14.5 per cent of the vote in 2022.
The Connah’s Quay Central seat had been vacant since the resignation of independent councillor Bernie Attridge, who represented the ward for more than two decades.
The Argoed and New Brighton seat became vacant after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Hilary McGuill on 11 April, aged 79, who had represented the ward for more than 25 years.
Vernon’s election takes Reform UK’s group on Flintshire County Council to 10 councillors.
The party’s group had already grown from six to nine councillors in the days before the by-election.
Marion Bateman, who represents Northop, Adele Davies-Cooke, who represents Gwernaffield and Gwernymynydd, and Roz Mansell, who represents Connah’s Quay: Wepre, joined the Reform group in the days before the by-election.
Bateman and Mansell had previously sat as Independents, and Davies-Cooke as a Conservative.
Dale Selvester, who represents Queensferry and Sealand, and Mike Peers, who represents Buckley: Pentrobin, also joined the group.
The group’s other members are Helen Brown, who represents Hawarden: Aston, Kristian Salkeld, who represents Leeswood, Ian Hodge, who represents Holywell East, and David Richardson, who represents Connah’s Quay: Golftyn.
