North Wales Police search for stolen baby wallaby
North Wales Police have launched an investigation following the report of a stolen baby wallaby in the Holyhead Road area of Cemaes Bay, Anglesey.
The young marsupial, affectionately named Walter, was reportedly taken between 4 am and 6 am on Thursday, January 18th.
Sergeant Beth Lloyd of the North Wales Police expressed the urgency of the situation, emphasising the owner’s distress. “Walter’s owner is understandably concerned for the wellbeing of the young wallaby and wishes to see him returned home,” she said.
The police are urging anyone who might have seen Walter, captured footage of the area during the time of the incident, or witnessed any suspicious activity, to come forward immediately.
Walter’s disappearance is not just a distressing event for his owner but also raises concerns about the well-being of a species not native to the UK.
Wallabies, originally from Australia and New Guinea, have been present in the UK for some time.
While there are a few established colonies in the wild due to escapes and deliberate releases over the years, they are not commonly seen.
Wallabies are generally hardy animals but may struggle with the colder UK climate, especially a young one like Walter.
The theft of Walter is particularly troubling given the care and specific environment these animals require.
Unlike common pets, wallabies need specialised care, making Walter’s safe return even more critical.
The police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their search for Walter.
They encourage anyone with relevant details to contact them via their website or by calling 101, quoting reference 24000085021.
