Introducing Wales’ biggest lottery winners of all time

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Winning the National Lottery is one of the biggest dreams of any adult across the UK, let alone Wales. However, there’s been several lucky individuals and syndicates in Wales that have toasted to the sweet victory of landing all six numbers on the iconic lotto game.

Whether it’s fast cars, luxury mansions or plush VIP holidays, lottery winners have it all on tap. All of which explains why the National Lottery remains such a popular tradition in the UK. It’s said that around 70% of all UK adults play it on a regular basis, which is around 45 million citizens, but only a handful are lucky enough to receive that oversized winners’ cheque.

The lotto phenomenon continues to grow

Aside from the UK National Lottery, recent innovations have made it possible for lotto enthusiasts to take part in some of the biggest lottery games operated overseas. This includes the US MegaMillions and the EuroJackpot. Lotto betting platforms like Lottoland allow UK-based lotto fans to place bets on the official results of upcoming draws. If they guess correctly, they are paid out the same prize as if they’d bought a ticket into the official draw. These sites cover their overheads using an insurance-backed business model which ensures the biggest jackpot wins are paid out by their insurers.

These sites have firmly established themselves in the UK gaming market, with Lottoland now fully regulated and licensed by the UK Gambling Commission for its additional iGaming services. In fact, Lottoland is positioned comfortably inside the 20 best casino bonuses in the UK iGaming space, based on the competitiveness and transparency of its promotions.

Nevertheless, instead of betting on the outcome, this cluster of Welsh winners bought a successful National Lottery ticket, etching their name in the record books for generations to come.

Introducing the biggest National Lottery winners from Wales

The Davies family in Monmouth landed a magnificent £61 million jackpot as a five-person syndicate in July 2016. It was a EuroMillions ticket, which saw the family bag around £12 million each.

Sonia Davies was in America with her partner at the time of the lottery win, receiving treatment on a cancerous tumour. Following a successful surgery and hearing of the latest ‘rollover’ of the EuroMillions, Sonia’s partner, Keith, asked the rest of the family to get a ticket and the rest is history.

In 2009, Caerleon lorry driver, Les Scadding became the UK’s biggest lottery winner at the time, taking home a £45.5 million EuroMillions win. He was part of a lottery syndicate in Liverpool, who shared the £91 million jackpot. Scadding admitted after his win that he was £68 into his bank overdraft, which would soon be cleared by his monumental win. In fact, he would go on to become chairman of his beloved Newport County Football Club.

A syndicate of catering workers at Neath Port Talbot Hospital saw their lives change overnight after a £25.5 million EuroMillions win in 2017. The six ladies won £4 million apiece and promptly handed their notices in to enjoy life, with the exception of one winner who had retired 12 months previously.

It’s always heart-warming to see lottery wins change the lives of hard-working individuals with dreams and aspirations to spend more time with their loved ones and see more of the world.
