Nearly 24,500 Flintshire households claiming single person council tax discount face annual check

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Nearly 24,500 Flintshire households claiming a single person discount on their council tax will be checked from July to confirm they are entitled to the reduction.

Flintshire County Council has brought in Datatank Ltd, a company that specialises in council tax discount reviews, to carry out the check.

The single person discount gives residents who live alone a 25 per cent reduction on their council tax bill.

Around one in three households in Flintshire currently claims the discount.

The council said most residents are claiming correctly, but that some cases may exist where a change in household occupancy has not been reported, or where a false claim has been made.

Where incorrect claims are found, the council said it will end the discount and seek to reclaim it from an appropriate date.

The review is described as a regular annual exercise and forms part of the council’s measures to prevent fraud.

Residents who think their discount may no longer be correct are urged to contact the council before the full review begins in July.

The council tax service can be reached on 01352 704848, or changes of circumstances can be reported online at www.flintshire.gov.uk/counciltax.
