Flintshire fundraiser in his 80s shortlisted for BBC Wales award for annual Connah’s Quay to Chester row

A Flintshire man in his 80s who rows from Connah’s Quay to Chester every year to raise money for Cancer Research UK has been shortlisted for a BBC Wales award.
Ray Woolley, from Flintshire, is among 32 finalists chosen from almost 500 entries for the 2026 BBC Make a Difference Awards in Wales.
He has been fundraising for Cancer Research UK for over 50 years.
His annual challenge sees him row a route from Connah’s Quay to Chester.
Ray is shortlisted in the Active Award category, which goes to an individual or group who has used physical activity or sport to improve the lives of those in their community.
The BBC Make a Difference Awards launched in Wales for the first time last year.
Garmon Rhys, Interim Director for BBC Cymru Wales, said:
“We are delighted about the phenomenal number of entries we received for the 2026 BBC Make a Difference Awards in Wales.”
Finalists are being judged by presenters from across the BBC, including BBC Radio 2’s Owain Wyn Evans, BBC Asian Network’s Bablu Shikdar and BAFTA-winning actress Rakie Ayola.
The ceremony will be held in Cardiff on 19 September 2026, hosted by BBC Radio Wales presenter Lucy Owen and BBC Radio Cymru’s Caryl Parry Jones.
