Gwella urges Flintshire families to start swimming lessons early

Families across Flintshire are being encouraged to enrol their children in swimming lessons at the start of the year to build water confidence, safety and swimming skills ahead of the summer months.
Gwella, which delivers swimming lessons at Buckley Leisure Centre, Mold Leisure Centre and Flint’s Jade Jones Pavilion, says starting lessons early gives children time to progress steadily and feel comfortable in the water by summer.
Swimming is recognised as an essential life skill that supports fitness, confidence and personal safety. While some schools include swimming in their curriculum, Gwella says community lessons are increasingly important due to challenges faced by schools in delivering sessions during the school day.
A Gwella Aquatics spokesperson said: “Starting swimming lessons early in the year gives children the time and confidence to feel safe and comfortable in the water by summer. Swimming is a vital life skill, and our lessons are designed to support children at every stage, from first splash to strong, confident swimmers.”
The Jade Jones Pavilion in Flint includes a dedicated shallow learner pool designed for beginners and younger swimmers. Gwella’s Learn to Swim programme follows the national Wave scheme, which takes children through eight progressive stages covering core swimming and water competence skills such as swimming without goggles, treading water and swimming in clothing.
Children who complete the Wave 8 level can continue developing their skills through the Rookie Lifeguard programme or local swimming clubs, which focus on lifesaving, fitness and competitive swimming.
Gwella also runs Little Paddler lessons for babies and toddlers aged up to four years, with new spaces recently added. Families paying for swimming lessons by Direct Debit receive free access to Gwella’s public swimming sessions, allowing children to practise outside lesson times.
The operator also supports the Welsh Government’s Free Swim Initiative, offering free sessions for juniors and for over-60s throughout the year. Session details are available on the swimming timetables at the bottom of the Gwella website.
