A former Alun School pupil now studying at Oxford University has won a science prize recognising outstanding A-level achievement.

Iestyn James, 18, secured the annual Synthite science prize after achieving an A* in chemistry and A grades in biology and physics while studying at the Alun School in Mold.

The award, sponsored by Mold-based chemical company Synthite, recognises students who have shown exceptional commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects.

Iestyn is currently an undergraduate studying biochemistry at University of Oxford and has ambitions to pursue a PhD or further research in cancer or stem cell biology.

He said: “I’ve always had an interest in STEM, and I enjoy problem solving and being inquisitive, so when I started applying this mindset to my studies, it’s paid off.

“Winning the prize has been great. I’m happy with myself and proud that my achievements have been recognised by someone else.

“As for my current course, I’m enjoying it and every lecture, class, and tutorial just confirms to me that I’ve made the right choice.”

During his time in sixth form, Iestyn completed a week-long summer work experience placement at ALS Laboratories, giving him insight into working in a commercial laboratory.

The Mold native said: “I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to learn more about the industry at a company that offers a range of environmental testing solutions.

“I believe this knowledge can only help prepare me for the future.”

David Goodchild, deputy headteacher at the Alun School, said: “It’s brilliant to see Iestyn’s hard work and dedication celebrated, and I’m confident he will continue to excel in his studies.

“With many past winners going on to achieve great success in their respective fields, it’s a fantastic motivator and reminder to our current pupils with regards to what can be accomplished.”

Sue Wild, HR director at Synthite, said: “The accolade is designed to acknowledge the passion and tenacity of pupils who have gone above and beyond in STEM subjects, so we commend Iestyn for his outstanding results.

“As a team we look forward to seeing him thrive during his time at university and beyond, and hope that his accomplishments will inspire other like-minded youngsters to pursue careers in the sector.”

Synthite has operated from its Alyn Works site on Denbigh Road in Mold since the 1950s and employs around 120 people.
