Festive filers: 40,000 complete tax returns over Christmas

More than 40,000 people took time during the festive season to file their Self Assessment tax returns, according to figures released by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Of these, 4,409 customers submitted their returns online on Christmas Day itself.
The statistics show that filing activity remained high throughout the Christmas period. On Christmas Eve, 23,731 taxpayers prioritised their financial obligations over last-minute shopping, with 3,458 submissions during the peak hour of 11:00 to 11:59.
Boxing Day was the busiest of the three days, with 11,932 returns filed, including 1,108 during the most popular hour of 16:00 to 16:59.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, praised those who filed early, saying:
“People who need to file a Self Assessment return and already have can enjoy the rest of the festive period knowing they’ve got it wrapped up for another year… For those who haven’t started yet, our online service is available 365 days a year, so there’s still a chance to get it done before 2024 is out!”
Taxpayers have until 31 January 2025 to complete their returns and pay any tax owed. For those filing before 30 December, there is an option to pay through their PAYE tax code, if eligible.
To make the process easier, HMRC encourages taxpayers to use its online resources, including guidance on GOV.UK and instructional videos on YouTube. The HMRC app also offers a streamlined way to pay tax bills.
Who Needs to File?
HMRC reminded customers that a tax return may be required if they:
- Are newly self-employed and earned over £1,000 in gross income.
- Wish to voluntarily pay Class 2 National Insurance Contributions.
- Are a new partner in a business partnership.
- Received more than £2,500 in untaxed income.
- Need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge due to earning over £50,000.
The department also warned taxpayers about scams, urging vigilance against fraudulent emails, phone calls, and texts. Detailed guidance on identifying scams is available on GOV.UK.
By filing early, customers can avoid the last-minute rush and ensure they meet the statutory deadline, helping to start the new year stress-free.
