The latest earnings report from Hasbro is in. The company which holds the global publishing rights of the world’s most popular board game, Monopoly, revealed the commercial impact of the mobile-exclusive Monopoly Go! app since its release in April 2023.

The Monopoly Go! app, developed by Scopely, has raked in more than £2.3 billion in revenue since hitting the app stores across the globe. Hasbro has teamed up with Scopely on numerous occasions, including licensed titles like Yahtzee with Buddies and Scrabble Go. After seven months of its release, Monopoly Go! had yielded over £760 million, so the latest figures suggest the app has maintained and even accelerated its momentum in the last year.

Hasbro’s Q2 2024 revenues were up 20% year-on-year, according to its chief financial officer, Gina Goetter, who attributed much of the increase to digital licensing “led by Monopoly Go!”, as well as Baldur’s Gate 3. In terms of licensing revenue alone, Monopoly Go! is now forecast to yield over £80 million for the entirety of 2024, but even senior figures believe this could underplay its commercial success.

Hasbro’s CEO, Chris Cox, acknowledged the company haven’t yet determined the “seasonality” of Monopoly Go! but Cox believes it will follow in the footsteps of other “hyperscale” casual gaming apps which will deliver a positive annuity for the firm for many years to come.

The Monopoly phenomenon

Since the release of the original board game via publishers, the Parker brothers, in 1935, Monopoly has cemented its position as the best-selling board game on the planet ever since. In fact, it’s reportedly shifted an eye-watering 275 million units of Monopoly board games in various guises throughout the decades. Some of the versions have become incredibly sought-after and valuable, including the gold and diamond encrusted version, which fetches upwards of £1.7 million.

The Monopoly brand has been licensed out for various uses through the years. One of its most recent moves was into the UK’s regulated iGaming market. Despite being in its infancy, Monopoly Casino has already established itself into the 20 top online casinos, based on the platform’s choice of games and the competitiveness of its player bonuses.

What is Monopoly Go! all about?

Monopoly Go! is the mobile version of the Monopoly board game, designed to be played in single-player mode. Available on both iOS and Android, Monopoly Go! fuses classic elements of the original board game with the beauty of social gaming. You can pit your wits against friends in the classic game mode or enter one of the unique alternative modes. This includes an “empire building” mode, where you can accrue your very own real-world real estate empire. This includes some of the most recognisable landmarks on the planet.

In fact, there’s 100+ alternative game boards to play on within Monopoly Go! which alludes to the longevity of the app. Once you’ve built your empire, you can then lock horns with other real estate magnates and destroy other players’ landmarks or pinch money to fund your next big acquisition.

Monopoly Go! looks set to earn Hasbro around £26-£27 million above the game’s minimum guarantee of £3.5-£4 million per quarter.
