Family-run Hertfordshire haulier P W Gates Distribution has completed the acquisition of a majority shareholding in Deeside based Mars-Jones Ltd, a logistics firm with a 100-year history.

The deal, described as a growth and efficiency boost for both companies, was finalised without disrupting operations.

Both firms are members of the Pallet-Track network and plan to leverage their combined strengths to expand their palletised freight operations.

P W Gates, founded in the 1970s by Peter Gates with a single van, has grown into a respected third-party logistics provider, serving a range of industries from its bases in Welwyn Garden City and Bedford.

Mars-Jones, established in 1924, specialises in distribution, warehousing, contract packing, and assembly for the food, drink, and mobility equipment sectors.

Its workforce and Silver-rated fleet will be retained, with operations continuing from its Sandycroft facility.

Together, the firms now operate from four depots with 316,000 sq. ft of warehousing space and a fleet of 84 vehicles.

P W Gates Development Director Chris Lynch said:

“This acquisition benefits our business enormously as it will give us and Mars-Jones greater access to new markets. It has boosted our growth, and the shared infrastructure will increase our efficiency.

“We have a lot to learn from each other and are lucky to retain the entire Mars-Jones workforce, which is a great asset to the P W Gates team.”

Mars-Jones Managing Director Chris Flynn added:
“We have worked alongside P W Gates for many years within the Pallet-Track network and are excited to see what the two businesses will deliver collaboratively.

“With the group’s combined presence in the north and south, we can offer a much broader logistical service, maximising our nationwide operation.”

Pallet-Track CEO Stuart Godman said the partnership highlights the power of collaboration within the network, praising both companies for their forward-thinking approach.

The acquisition sets the stage for significant growth, uniting two respected hauliers to offer enhanced logistical solutions across the UK.
