Chester Market will remain closed ‘for the time being’ while an investigation continues into an incident that occurred in the unit on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services were called just before 6.30pm on Tuesday following a suspected ‘small’ gas explosion in the Turtle Bay unit next to Chester Market.

The market was evacuated and streets nearby were closed as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Three contractors working within the yet to be opened Turtle Bay restaurant were taken to hospital with serious burns following the gas explosion.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that it is in the process of “making enquiries” into the incident.

The new Turtle Bay restaurant, which is part of the Northgate development next to the new Chester Market is due to launch on Saturday, April 22.

A spokesperson for Turtle Bay said: “Last night, we were informed that a suspected gas explosion occurred inside our unit in Chester Market, which is yet to be open to the public.”

In a statement Cheshire and Chester West Council said:

“Unfortunately following the incident in the Turtle Bay unit, Chester Market will need to remain closed for the time being whilst we undertake some further investigations and essential repair works.”

“We want the market back open as much as we know you do, so please bear with us whilst we get things straight behind the scenes.”

“Our wonderful traders and staff also need some time to restock and clear up so that they can once again provide the great Chester Market experience.”

“At this time though, our principal thoughts are with those injured and their families at this difficult time and wish them a speedy recovery.”
