Airbus Broughton opens new £6.6m Beluga transport hub

Airbus has opened a new £6.6 million logistics hub at its Broughton site to improve how aircraft wings are prepared and moved to other Airbus factories across Europe.
The new building is a central base for managing the large metal frames, known as jigs, which hold the wings securely during transport on the company’s distinctive Beluga aircraft.
It is the first facility of its kind in the Airbus network and represents a major investment in Broughton’s role within the UK’s aerospace industry.
The purpose-built hub will make Airbus’ wing logistics more efficient, helping the company meet new European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards and increase overall transport capacity.

As Airbus increases aircraft production, the hub will allow twice as many A320 Family wings to be carried on each Beluga flight, rising from four to eight, improving efficiency across the global supply chain.
Gareth Davies, Airbus Head of Broughton, said: “The new Oversize Transport Hub will make a real difference to how every wing we build is transported. It will help us work more smoothly and safely and gives us exactly what we need to keep pace with future production increases. It’s a great step forward for the site and everyone who works here.”
The investment strengthens Broughton’s position as a key part of Airbus’ operations.
The site, which employs around 5,000 people, manufactures wings for the A320, A330 and A350 aircraft. The wings are transported by Beluga aircraft to Airbus assembly lines across Europe.
By centralising how it handles these large transport frames, Airbus says it is entering a new phase where innovation and operational efficiency go hand in hand.
