Update: Traffic reports now state: “Sensors confirm that the westbound carriageway has now re-opened, while the eastbound remains closed.”

Images from the scene show firefighters working to extinguish a double decker bus that had been completely gutted by fire.

Crews used hose reels to damp down the vehicle, with significant damage visible across both decks.

Earlier report: The A55 North Wales Expressway was closed in both directions this afternoon following a vehicle fire between Junction 36 for the A5104 Mold Road (Warren Bank Interchange) and Junction 38 for the A483 Wrexham Road (Posthouse Roundabout).

Traffic Wales reported that the road was shut both ways while emergency services dealt with the blaze.

Posting on the A55 Facebook group, one user, Katy, said: “Double decker bus on fire, only driver present and safe.”

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We’re currently dealing with a vehicle fire on the A55 eastbound. The road has closed in both directions from J36 Broughton to J38 Posthouse A483.”

“Please avoid the area.”
