Hot weather prompts fire warning over discarded cigarettes

A warning has been issued urging people to dispose of cigarettes safely after a number of fires across North Wales were believed to have been caused by discarded smoking materials.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has appealed to the public to take extra care during the current spell of hot, dry weather, warning that cigarettes that are not fully extinguished can quickly ignite dry grass, bins and other outdoor areas.
The service said it has attended a number of fires in recent days that are believed to have been caused by discarded cigarettes.
Residents are being reminded never to leave lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended and to make sure they are completely extinguished before disposal.
Smokers are also advised to tap ash into an ashtray rather than a wastebasket, avoid allowing ash or cigarette ends to build up, and use a sturdy, non-combustible ashtray that cannot easily tip over.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is also urging people never to smoke in bed and to take extra care if they are tired, have been drinking alcohol or are taking medication or drugs, as this increases the risk of falling asleep while a cigarette is still burning.
Lighters and matches should be kept out of the reach of children, with the service recommending the use of child-resistant lighters and matchboxes where possible.
The fire service is also encouraging households to ensure they have working smoke alarms and to test them every week.
