From specialist labs to shared entrances, the design of Flintshire’s new Ysgol Mynydd Isa Campus reveals how interiors were planned to bring two schools together under one roof.

The campus, which welcomed more than 1,300 pupils this September, was commissioned by Flintshire Council and delivered with design input from Manchester-based consultancy Space Zero.

The firm was responsible for the interior design, manufacture and installation of fitted furniture across the combined nursery, primary and secondary site.

The design team’s task was to make sure every classroom and specialist area was ready for the start of term.

That included teaching walls, science labs, cloakrooms and storage — all tailored to the needs of different age groups.

One of the main design challenges was uniting the primary and secondary schools under a single entrance while keeping their individuality.

Distinct layouts, finishes and materials were chosen to give each area its own character, while maintaining a consistent sense of place across the wider campus.

Wayne Taylor, Founder and CEO of Space Zero, said: “Our purpose has always been to rethink the possibilities of education environments, so that every learner has the best chance to flourish. Delivering this project for the start of term is a significant collective achievement, and we are proud that hundreds of students will walk into spaces designed to support their growth and potential from the very beginning.”

The Mynydd Isa project forms part of a wider programme of 13 schools completed across England, Scotland and Wales this summer. Together, they provide new or refurbished environments for more than 9,000 students across nursery, primary, secondary, SEND, faith schools, colleges and universities.

Wayne added: “Every project we deliver is about people: empowering teachers with the tools to inspire, giving pupils spaces where they feel safe and motivated, and reassuring parents that their children are getting the best possible start.”

“Our role is to listen, collaborate and create environments that honour that trust. Whether it’s a specialist college or a local primary, our commitment is the same: to design schools that enable learning, nurture wellbeing, and serve communities for generations to come.”
