Shotton’s Dee Park Community Woodland awarded Green Flag for first time

Dee Park Community Woodland in Shotton has won its first Green Flag Award.
The site, on former Shotton Steelworks land, had been neglected for years and was previously used by drug users, with litter a persistent problem.
Since 2021, funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Welsh Government has enabled the local community to plant more than 5,500 trees and clear the site, creating an accessible green space a short walk from Shotton.
The woodland previously won a Bionet Business Award for its impact on biodiversity in north east Wales, and holds National Forest for Wales status.
It is run by Care and Repair North East Wales as part of a wider project it calls Place For You.
Dee Park Community Woodland is one of five Flintshire green spaces to achieve Green Flag Award status for 2026/27, alongside Bailey Hill, Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, Wepre Park and Mold Cemetery.
Bailey Hill, Greenfield Valley Heritage Park and Wepre Park have all retained their Green Flag status for another year, while Dee Park Community Woodland and Mold Cemetery have won the award for the first time.
The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces, assessing sites on safety, cleanliness, environmental management and how welcoming they are.
Ninety three green spaces across Wales achieved full Green Flag Award status in 2026/27, run by Keep Wales Tidy and supported by the Welsh Government.
Community Clubhouse & Garden in Mold has also retained its Green Flag Community Award, a separate category recognising volunteer run spaces such as community gardens and local nature reserves.
Wales retained more Green Flag Community Awards than any other country delivering the scheme, for the third year running, with 237 locations recognised across the country.
Owen Derbyshire, Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to see five Green Flags in Flintshire this year. Congratulations to the green spaces which have retained their awards for another year, and to Dee Park Community Woodland Place for You, and Mold Cemetery for achieving the honour for the first time.”
Cllr Chris Dolphin, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Regeneration, Countryside and Tourism, said: “We’re delighted that some of Flintshire’s most treasured sites have once again achieved Green Flag status.”
“I’d like to thank our dedicated staff and the community volunteers whose hard work and commitment year round help keep these places welcoming and well maintained for the benefit of everyone who uses them,” he said.
