Tata Steel UK has generously donated £250 to North East Wales Rescue (NEWSAR) as part of their vacuum mattress fundraising appeal.

NEWSAR volunteers Damon Winterbottom, who works at Tata Steel and Fundraising Officer, Gill Brailsford received the donation from the Shotton-based firm.

These crucial medical devices are integral to NEWSAR’s life-saving operations in some of the most challenging and remote terrains.

The vacuum mattresses NEWSAR currently possesses are nearing the end of their operational lifespan.

These mattresses, when used in conjunction with specialist stretchers, become rigid after air is pumped out, cocooning casualties and providing essential neck and spine stability. This not only offers pain relief but also ensures the injured person’s security and comfort during their journey to safety.

NEWSAR, a dedicated team of unpaid volunteers, faces formidable challenges, often navigating difficult terrains in adverse weather conditions, sometimes in the dark, to rescue individuals in distress.

They respond to approximately 80 callouts annually, which range from brief incidents to multi-day operations, involving searches for missing persons who may be vulnerable or unwell.

Their operational area encompasses Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham, and parts of Conwy and Powys. Furthermore, NEWSAR extends its assistance to other Mountain Rescue teams across North Wales and Lowland Search and Rescue teams in Cheshire and Shropshire, underlining its vital role in the wider community’s safety and well-being.

The charity relies on public donations, grants, legacies, street collections, and collection tins to fund its critical operations, with approximately £30,000 needed annually to cover expenses such as fuel, vehicle repairs, protective equipment, training courses, and essential team equipment like ropes and stretchers.

To support NEWSAR’s ongoing vacuum mattress fundraising campaign and contribute to their vital work, you can make a donation through their JustGiving page: Donate Now.
