Mold primary school wins Welsh climate award for waste reduction work

A primary school in Mold has won a national climate award after its pupils researched ways to cut waste across their school and local community.
Ysgol Bryn Coch won the Build a Waste-Free World category at Keep Wales Tidy’s Climate Challenge Cymru, a competition for primary and secondary schools across Wales.
Schools were asked to submit short videos capturing ideas to tackle one of five global environmental challenges, inspired by The Earthshot Prize.
Ysgol Bryn Coch’s entry covered composting, food redistribution, pre-loved school uniforms and the recycling of single-use plastic.
Pupils were presented with their award at a ceremony in Cardiff on Wednesday 17 June by Mrs Morfudd Meredith, Lord-Lieutenant of South Glamorgan.
Leanne Jones, Teacher and Eco-Coordinator at the school, said:
“We are incredibly proud of our Eco Council representatives for their hard work and creative thinking, supported by our whole school community. The award recognises the school’s commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. As our entry said ‘from classroom to community, change starts with us.'”
Climate Challenge Cymru is managed by Keep Wales Tidy’s Eco-Schools team in partnership with Welsh Government.
The winning videos are available on the Keep Wales Tidy website.
