Flintshire residents asked to have their say on county-wide dog and alcohol orders

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

County-wide orders to prevent anti-social behaviour involving dogs or alcohol have been opened up to consultation by Flintshire County Council.

This autumn two Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) that apply to the entire county are due for renewal. Last week Flintshire’s Cabinet voted to open them up to public consultations – seeking the views of the public on whether the orders were effective and required.

The orders were last renewed in October 2023.

Without renewal, the two existing orders will expire on October 29. Residents and businesses who wish to take part can visit Flintshire County Council’s website where there is a ‘consultations’ page where you can provide your feedback.

The Dog Control PSPO sets out several requirements for dog owners across Flintshire. These include removing dog waste from all public places, carrying a means to pick up waste – in other words a poop bag or similar and placing a dog on a lead when instructed by an authorised officer.

Dog owners are also required to keep their pets out of marked sports pitches, formal recreation areas, fenced play areas and school grounds, keep them on leads in cemeteries and to obey other specific restrictions enacted in specific locations across the county – sauch as the ban on dogs at the Rosie fishing lake in Wepre Park and Mold Memorial Garden.

Flintshire’s Alcohol Control PSPO gives police officers the power to request that individuals surrender alcohol if they are believed to be causing a nuisance in a public place.

Councillor Ted Palmer, Cabinet Member for Highways, Assets and Public Protection, said: “PSPOs play an important role in keeping our communities safe, clean and welcoming.

“We want to hear from residents, community groups and partners about how the current orders are working and whether they should be extended. Your feedback will help ensure we continue to address the issues that matter most to our communities.”
