Police warn Flintshire dog owners they may smash car windows to save pets in heat

North Wales Police’s south Flintshire team has warned dog owners they may smash car windows to release pets left inside as temperatures rise.
The force said reports of dogs being left in hot cars increase with warmer weather.
On a mild 20C day, officers said, the inside of a car can heat up by more than 10C in 10 minutes and reach nearly 48C within an hour.
Temperatures in Flintshire are forecast to hit 30C on Bank Holiday Monday.
In a Facebook post, the force said: “We are massive dog lovers here in Flintshire South so if we cannot get hold of you to return to your car immediately there is a good chance we will need to smash your car window to release the dog.”
The post added: “Please don’t let your dog suffer in the car, leave them at home, they would much rather be at home than sat in a car waiting for you to go shopping.”
Officers also warned about walking dogs in warm weather.
The force urged owners to walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, or to skip the walk on hot days.
The post said: “A dog won’t die from missing a walk but they can die from heatstroke.”
