Police issue travel and safety advice for Southport Air Show

Merseyside Police have issued safety and travel advice for visitors attending the Southport Air Show this weekend.
The event, which takes place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August from 10am to 5pm each day, is expected to attract large crowds to the town’s seafront.
Chief Superintendent Claire Doyle, the event commander, said:
“As always, we’re absolutely thrilled to be supporting the Southport Air Show. It is such a cherished, family-friendly weekend on the Southport summer calendar.
“Merseyside Police has a long tradition of supporting organisers of major events in partnership with other emergency services and stakeholders. We prepare well in advance with extensive planning taking place by experienced officers and staff, to ensure that everyone has a great time and enjoys the event safely.”
Travel advice
Police are reminding visitors to plan their journeys by car, bus or train in advance and check for updates on social media and local radio, including Dune Radio, the event’s official station.

Road closures are in place between Marine Drive at Southport Pier and the Esplanade roundabout behind Pleasureland until midnight on Monday 1 September. On show days, the closures will extend further, from the Fairway roundabout in the north to the Weld Road roundabout in the south. Access to Ocean Plaza will remain open via the Marine Way Bridge.
Security checks
Visitors are being told to expect security checks on entry, with searches possible at any time. Prohibited items include knives, fireworks, laser devices and transmitting equipment.
Chief Superintendent Doyle added: “Help the staff do their jobs and keep things moving by arriving in plenty of time. I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience and cooperation in these essential checks.”
Police say there will be an increased presence in the area, including plain clothes officers. Drones are banned within the restricted airspace during the event.

Confirmed aerial displays include the Hawarden-based Strikemaster, RAF Typhoon, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Rolls Royce Spitfire, Team Raven, Richard Goodwin Jet Pitts, The Starlings, L39 Albatross, Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers, the Falcons Parachute Display Team, and more.
