Coleg Cambria has launched a new series of flexible higher education courses as it expands its HN Flex model across North East Wales.

The college said the approach is designed to support people who want to study around work, family and other commitments, offering bitesize and accessible learning without losing academic recognition.

Following the launch of an HNC Flex in Business at its Northop campus earlier this year, Cambria University Centre is now rolling out a wider range of Higher National unit delivery, giving learners more choice in how and when they study.

Developed in partnership with Pearson, the HN Flex model allows learners to study selected units at their own pace while receiving support from tutors.

The qualifications hold the same academic status and employer recognition as traditional Higher Nationals.

Emma Hurst, Dean of Access and Higher Education at Cambria University Centre, said: “HN Flex is a trailblazing step for further and higher education in Wales.

“We know that life doesn’t pause for education, and our learners shouldn’t have to choose between personal responsibilities and professional development.

“HN Flex empowers people to study when and where it works for them – with high-quality teaching, recognised qualifications, and real career progression opportunities.”

Among the new qualifications launching in 2026 are HN Flex Cyber Security Level 4, HN Flex Innovation and Digital Transformation Level 4, HN Flex Professional Practice in the Digital Economy, and HN Flex Programming Level 4.

Courses in Construction and Hospitality Management are also due to be introduced.

The programmes build on the original HN Flex in Business course, which allows learners to complete stackable units that can be built toward a full qualification.

The new courses extend the model into digital and technology subjects, aimed at people looking to retrain, upskill or take their first step into higher education.

Learners will be supported by Cambria staff across campuses in Wrexham, Deeside and Northop. Funding support is available for eligible learners through regional Employer Skills programmes.
