PICTURE UPDATE: New £6.4m Shotton primary school Wellhouse School / Ysgol Ty Ffynnon

Latest pictures of the new £6.4 million Wellhouse School development in Shotton.

A new £6.4m primary school currently being built in Shotton will be known as Wellhouse School or Ysgol Ty Ffynnon when it opens in September 2014.

The name has historical connections to an old school house situated at the bottom of the current school playing field.

Well House is now a private residence but was originally a school in the late 1800s.

Pupils and local councillors have been viewing the progress of the new school complex and playing field which will replace Shotton Infants School and the existing Taliesin Junior School on Taliesin Avenue, merging the two schools.

Once the new school is built and occupied, the existing junior school will be demolished.

The new single storey building will accommodate 270 primary and 30 nursery pupils.

There will be nine classrooms and two resource classes for children with moderate learning difficulties, a nursery, assembly hall, studio, kitchen and community facilities.

Outside there will be landscaped play and recreation areas.

The school is funded jointly by Flintshire County Council and the Welsh Government and is being built by Read Construction Holdings Ltd of Brymbo.

Helen Hughes, Head teacher of the current Taliesin Junior School, said:

“We are all very excited to see the development of our new school. Read Construction has worked closely with the children of both schools and has involved us from the very early stages. We are delighted that our new playing field is now ready for the children to use again and we look forward to next September when Ysgol Ty Ffynnon will open.”

Councillor Chris Bithell, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said:

“We are really pleased with the rapid progress of the new school. The building is starting to take shape and will provide the most modern and up-to-date facilities for the pupils from both schools. The new name brings everything together and takes into consideration the history of the local area.”

Commercial Manager John Prichard-Taylor from Read Construction Holdings Ltd, said:

“Minimising disruption to the staff and pupils is a driver within our team. We are delighted that we have been able to hand the remodelled playing field back to the pupils nine months earlier than originally planned to enhance the schools curriculum delivery.”
