Mother of murdered Flint school girl Janet Commins thanks public for their support

The mother of Janet Commins, the 15 year old school girl who was murdered in Flint in 1976 has thanked the public for their support and the laying of flowers in memory of her daughter.

Mrs Eileen Commins, Janet’s sole surviving parent said;

“I would like to thank all the people who placed lovely flowers at the Gorsedd Stones in Flint in memory of Janet. I was very moved by it. Thank you all very much and God bless you all.”

Janet went missing after going to Flint Sports Centre to see friends, her body was later found on Gwynedd Primary School fields.

A 57 year old man, Stephen Anthony Hough was charged with the murder and rape of Janet, he appeared before Mold Crown Court on September 8.

Hough was also charged with rape and sexual touching following allegations made earlier this year.

A provisional trial date has been set for the end of February 2017.

A man had been previously imprisoned for manslaughter of Janet Commins after admitting responsibility for her death.

Senior Investigating Officer Det Supt Iestyn Davies of North Wales Police following Houghs arrest said:

“There have been significant developments to assist police investigations of this nature in the past 40 years and significant changes in the way we approach murder investigations.

“This man has not previously been arrested in connection with the 1976 investigation.

“A dedicated team of officers have been working on this investigation and as a result further evidence has come to light which has caused us to review all the circumstances surrounding the initial investigation.

Consequently a referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”
