Chemical manufacturer Synthite opened its doors to two Mold Town councillors to provide them with an in-depth insight into the company’s operations.

Councillors Sarah Taylor and Tina Claydon were given a tour of Synthite’s Alyn Works site, which has been in operation since the 1950s and is home to both Synthite and TS Resins.

Synthite’s main product is formaldehyde, which is used in building materials and household products such as furniture, flooring, and fabric. The councillors were briefed on the processes at the site and saw the updated equipment for new processes.

The visit was the first tour of the site since the start of the pandemic, and Councillor Taylor, who also attended the last visit in 2019, was excited to get another in-depth look at the operations.

“It’s interesting to see the levels of expertise that are required.

Synthite is a major employer in the Mold area, offering good quality jobs, and it’s great to see that a local business is still clearly thriving after all this time,” said Councillor Taylor.

Councillor Claydon, whose ward encompasses Synthite, was pleased to learn about the processes and energy use at the facility, including recycling some waste products such as steam.

“I appreciated being able to take a walk around and gain a better understanding of the work that takes place,” she said.

Synthite director and operations manager Keith Polden was pleased to impart some knowledge to the councillors and answer their questions.

“It was wonderful to be able to impart some knowledge and both of them asked some pertinent questions that showed a genuine interest and desire to understand what happens onsite,” he said.

The Alyn Works site currently employs around 125 people at Synthite and a further 30 at TS Resins.

The visit by the councillors demonstrated their interest in understanding and supporting the local businesses in their community.
