A major programme of road maintenance and improvement works has started in Flintshire, funded through a Welsh Government initiative to speed up repairs to deteriorating highways.

The Local Government Borrowing Initiative (LGBI) is providing £10m of revenue funding to local councils to unlock £120m of capital investment across Wales.

The scheme aims to increase the amount of resurfacing and pothole repair work completed by the 22 local authorities, focusing on roads most in need.

Flintshire has secured £5.66m from the fund for road maintenance over the next two years.

The programme will run in phases, with money split between the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 financial years.

The first phase of resurfacing, worth £2.7m, begins this week at 26 locations across the county, with further works planned later in the year.

A £1.2m carriageway patching programme, which started in August, will continue over two years.

Surface dressing works for 2025 have already been completed, delivering £450,000 worth of improvements.

Councillor Ted Palmer, Cabinet member for highways, said: “We very much welcome this major funding, which will allow us to tackle the significant backlog of construction and repair work required on the road networks across the county. We know that this is a priority for our residents and local communities, and it’s essential that we keep our roads safe and well maintained.”

Carriageway and footway works are prioritised using annual condition survey data and visual inspections. Further phases of the programme will be published in due course.

Full details of the road schemes can be found on the Flintshire Council website.
