Hawarden Rangers FC have made it into the final of the Jewson Building Better Communities competition, they now have the chance to win a share of a £100,000 fund to help refurbish the clubs Gladstone Pavilion.

The club based at Gladstone playing fields was formed in 1974, they currently have over 250 young members aged 5-16 plus senior teams.

It has strong links to the local community and has helped local footballing legends with their careers including Michael Owen, Gary Speed and Ian Rush.

The upkeep of the Pavilion, which was originally built in 1937 for the Gladstone Playing Field Committee, in association with The Sir William Gladstone Estates, is a major expense for the club. It has not been refurbished for over 20 years and with the recent signing of a 20 year lease on the building with the Hawarden Community Council, the club is now responsible for the maintenance of the inside.[pullquote cite=”Club Chairman Lyn Owen” type=”right”]Winning the money will enable us to provide our members and visitors with better facilities in a modern and safer environment[/pullquote]

The money would enable the club to provide members and visitors with a more modern and safer environment – including upgraded changing rooms, improved showers and an area for first aid provision.

Lyn Owen, Club Chairman is calling on local residents to support the club by voting for the project online, he said;

“With the attraction of more females getting involved as match officials, we would like to encourage their participation further and create separate changing rooms, especially for them.”

As part of its Building Better Communities project, Jewson asked communities to nominate a project to win a share of the £100,000, which could be spent on anything from a new roof on the village hall to a much needed coat of paint for a long-forgotten public space.

David Fenton, marketing director at Jewson said,

“Now the shortlist has been decided, residents within Hawarden and the surrounding areas must get behind the project in order for the football club to win a share of the prize, helping to improve the community.”
