Two of Hawarden’s historic buildings will welcome visitors next month as part of Cadw’s annual Open Doors programme.

On Friday 6 September, the North East Wales Archives, based at the Grade II listed Old Rectory, will offer behind-the-scenes tours and talks.

The Georgian building dates back to the 18th century and now houses Flintshire’s historic records in climate-controlled strongrooms.

Visitors can view documents that span from the 13th century to the present day, covering family history, local properties and community events.

This year’s theme is Researching the History of Houses in Flintshire.

The programme includes talks by Eleanor Carpenter of the Discovering Old Welsh Houses Group, who will present research into local properties, and Dr Angie Sutton-Vane, who will share her study of Plas yn Bwl, a Grade II* listed medieval house in Caergwrle.

The Archives schedule is as follows:
• 10am – Strongroom tour (45 mins)
• 11am – Talk by Eleanor Carpenter
• 11.30am – Strongroom tour (45 mins)
• 12.30pm – Talk by Dr Angie Sutton-Vane
• 1pm – Strongroom tour (45 mins)

Booking is required by calling 01244 532364 or emailing [email protected]
.
A week later, on Saturday 13 September, the Grade II listed Hawarden Masonic Hall will open its doors for guided tours.

The building was constructed in 1877 as a boys’ school under the Education Act and has been used as a Masonic Hall since 1913.

Tours will take visitors inside the sandstone building and reveal details hidden behind its old walls and bricked-up windows.

Hawarden Dee Valley Rotary will also be serving drinks and cakes in the dining hall from 10am until 4.30pm.

The 30-minute guided tours run hourly from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Spaces are limited and must be booked in advance by calling 01244 830805 or emailing [email protected]
(stating “Cadw tour”).
