The Welsh Government has doubled the grant funding available to taxi drivers in Wales to cover their loss of income over the festive period.

Taxi drivers will now be able to claim up to £1,000 if their takings were reduced by 50%, making the grant more accessible for the many who need it.

The grant available has been raised from an initial figure of £500.

The grant scheme is to support businesses with their immediate cash flow and to help them survive the economic consequences of additional restrictions introduced on the 26th December 2021 to control the spread of Covid-19.

Wales’ economy minister Vaughan Gething said:

“Following discussions with partners, industry and trade unions, we have increased the award for qualifying sole traders, freelancers and taxi drivers who do not pay rates to £1,000.”

Unite Union said: “The earnings of Welsh taxi drivers took a huge hit as a result of the introduction of tighter covid restrictions in Wales.”

Unite Regional Officer, Alan McCarthy commented; “Taxi drivers across Wales will breathe a little easier with this increase in financial support which Unite has achieved through constructive dialogue with Welsh Government.”

“With the restrictions in place, income opportunities for drivers were severely impacted.”

“So much of the taxi trade relies on the hospitality sector. ”

“The Christmas and New Year period has always been a key time for the trade-in Wales, and the earnings they make have to see them through the historically leaner times in January.”
