Coleg Cambria’s Samantha Adams had a double reason to celebrate last weekend.

Not only was it her eighteenth birthday, but she won a gold medal for Team Wales at this year’s WorldSkills final in the Beauty Therapy category, fighting off competition from contenders across the UK.

Samantha is now eligible to compete in the grand final of WorldSkills held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015.

The competition, held at the NEC in Birmingham, saw students demonstrate their impressive skills in their areas of expertise in front of hundreds of visitors and top industry judges. As part of the final competition students needed to demonstrate technical accuracy, commercial and client awareness with points awarded for creativity and the degree of difficulty.

The college won 7 medals and 4 commendations in total, which puts them in second place in the World Skills UK league table.

Silver medals were won by Aurimas Bernaviticus for Joinery, Ryan Renshaw for Auto Technology and John Freeman for Sheet Metalwork.  Bronze medals were awarded to Adam Griffiths for Sheet Metalwork, Philip Broodbank for Aero Mechnical and to the college’s Video Moving Image team.  Commendations for a high standard of work were also received by Gareth Fernandes Phillips for  Sheet Metalwork,  Danielle Evans for Hairdressing, Marilyn Lowrie for Media Make-up and Stacey Swan for Nail Art.

Samantha said;

“I still can’t believe that I won a gold medal – it’s beyond my wildest dreams!  I really enjoyed taking part in the competition and winning was just great”.

David Jones Prinicpal and Chief executive of Coleg Cambria said:

“I’m delighted at the success of all of our students.  They’ve really worked hard to prepare for this competition, continually developing their skills to be the best in their field.   A big thank you to the staff who’ve supported the students so well throughout the process, enabling them to compete on the national stage alongside the UK’s most talented apprentices and learners”.
