Next month, Chester Cathedral is set to host ‘Discovery’, an awe-inspiring light and sound event that promises to be a visual and intellectual feast.

The spectacular immersive journey invites visitors to explore the Cathedral in an entirely new light, offering a unique blend of art, science, and spirituality.

‘Discovery’ is not just an exhibition but an immersive experience that allows visitors to fully engage with the artwork and contemplate humanity’s place in the world.

The installation encourages reflection on our relationship with planet Earth and beyond, incorporating installations of sound and light art that transport the audience on a journey through space.

The event will feature original footage of a rocket launch, allowing visitors to explore the creation story and the Big Bang within the sacred space of Chester Cathedral.

One of the highlights includes a final image of Earth, viewed as if looking back from space under a galaxy of stars.

This cosmic experience is designed to awe and inspire, bridging the gap between the terrestrial and the celestial.

‘Discovery’ also delves into the realms of chemistry and biology. It artistically interprets the scale of molecules, cells, and DNA, offering a creative exploration of the history of science and its contributions to humanity.

The event pays homage to famous scientists from the past and present, reflecting upon their significant contributions to our understanding of the physical world.

The architectural splendor of Chester Cathedral will be highlighted and enhanced by the artwork projected throughout. As visitors walk through the light artworks and installations, the Cathedral’s beauty is not only exposed but also redefined, providing a backdrop that is both historical and ethereal.

The artistic collaboration known as ‘Luxmuralis’, meaning ‘light murals’ in Latin, is the creative force behind this event. Known for creating large-scale, site-specific installations, Luxmuralis has brought art and creativity to varied spaces across the UK and Europe, and ‘Discovery’ at Chester Cathedral is their latest venture.

‘Discovery’ promises to be an event that not only illuminates Chester Cathedral in a breathtaking display of lights and sounds but also enlightens its visitors on a journey through space, science, and human achievement. It is an invitation to view the world, the universe, and ourselves in a new and radiant light.

  • Show times are from Wednesday, February 21 to Saturday, February 24.
  • The event starts each day at 5:45 pm, continuing until 8:30 pm.
