Plans to deliver a bus service that puts passengers and communities first are moving forward with the introduction of the Bus Services (Wales) Bill.

With the Senedd back from recess, Hannah Blythyn, Member of the Senedd for Delyn, has voted in support of the Bill.

The proposals set out a vision for a modern, joined-up public transport system with one timetable, one ticket and one network, intended to make journeys easier, greener and more affordable.

Hannah Blythyn MS said: “Buses are a lifeline for people right across our community. For a bus service to work, it must be reliable, affordable, easy to use – and shaped by the needs of the community.

“That’s exactly what the Bus Bill is about, making sure buses serve people and places better, connect our communities, and give passengers a greater say in the routes and services they rely on.

“This is about building a transport system that works for us all – not just for profit.”

The Bill will see services planned and coordinated in the public interest, rather than left to the market, with the aim of tackling isolation in rural areas where access to transport is most difficult.

Steps are already being taken to make bus travel more affordable. Earlier this month the MyTravelPass scheme was launched, offering bus journeys for 16 to 21 year olds at £1 a single or £3 all day. The scheme will be extended to under-15s later this autumn.

Hannah Blythyn met with local Welsh Youth Parliament Member Ben Harris at Mold Bus Station to discuss the Bill and the new £1 fares.

She said: “I’m committed to promoting bus travel across the communities I serve. When it comes to public transport, it is buses rather than trains that reach more widely across our area – that’s why I want to see better buses and fairer fares. The first step is the MyTravelPass, the next step will be the Bus Bill being introduced this autumn, which will mean our buses will serve people and places better and connect communities right across the area.”

Ben Harris, Delyn’s Welsh Youth Parliament Member, said: “As Delyn’s Youth Parliament Member I’m delighted by the new MyTravelPass. By capping bus fares at £1 for young people, a real difference is going to be made in order to get people from A to B without having to rely on the car. I will bring this to the transport committee, I sit on, and it’s good news, and I welcome it.”

The Bus Services (Wales) Bill will place bus services back into public control, aiming to deliver more reliable, affordable and accessible routes across the country.
